Emergency Telephones

Student Using Emergency Phone

Walking through campus today, there are several blue emergency telephones located in various areas.  These were installed in 1992 to improve campus security and to make students feel safer when walking to and from halls no matter if it was day or night.  Standing at eight feet tall, the phones are easily visible to students, staff, and faculty.

In October of 1992, the Daily Nebraskan reported that 26 emergency phone units would be installed on City Campus and 10 would be installed on East Campus.  The phones could be used not only for emergencies, but also when someone is having car troubles or needs directions on campus.  With the emergency telephones there was not only physical security on campus, but students also felt mentally safer knowing that they could use the phones if they needed to.
