Shortly after the "Sampsons" were fired, the school was turned into a research institute as they -- and many others -- had wanted. The governmenet gave $15,000 to each state to conduct research and establish research centers. Professors became scholars once again as they undertook research projects, but had to balance that with their duties as teachers at the same time.
