Ross Dons Uniform Tuesday Afternoon

Giant Guard Decides that He Will Play Football After All.

The Team Looked the Best Yet in Tuesday's Scrimmage

The Cornhusker football fortunes were given a real boost Tuesday afternoon when Clinton Ross, the 200 pound colored guard of last season's team, appeared in a uniform and took his old place at guard in the scrimmage against a combination of the freshmen and varsity scrubs. Because of his school his school work and an outside job, which kept him busy, Ross had been unable to get out for this year's team and the coach had almost given up hopes of the giant lineman's return.

However it was up to Professor Scott of the literary department in the university, a regular football fan, to finally persuade Toss that this was the year of all years when Coach Stiehm needed him. By appealing to Ross' sense of school loyalty the professor succeeded in getting him to make the sacrifice necessary to play this season.

Things Look Much Better

Since Towle returned and Ross decided to help bring another championship to the prairie school things are looking much better on the gridiron and the season may not be as devoid of glory as it first seemed. There is even some excuse for the Cornhusker enthusiast to predict that the Huskers will give the Gophers a run for the money in the big game of the year. Of course a victory over Dr. William's men is as unlikely as it ever was. In fact it begins to look as though Minnesota would be unbeatable again this season and nothing less than a Western Conference championship will satisfy the Minneapolis students.

Due to the large number of freshmen football men which was compelled to report for drill Tuesday afternoon Coach Dudley loaned the youngsters a few of the scrubs in the scrimmage with the first team men. This combination was stronger than any presented before Stiehm's pets but the red and white sleeved players went through in better shape than they have shown before this season.

Two Touchdowns for Varsity

In regular play the varsity succeeded in reeling off a pair of touchdowns in jig time. Dig Ross opened hole after hole in the youngster's line through which Rutherford and Howard sifted for long gains.

The freshmen backfield which was intact with Chamberlain, Amack, Rasmussen and Renfro, was not able to make the gains through the varsity tackles and guards that it did when the teams met last week. In fact the plunging youngsters were hurled back for a loss frequently during the practice and never this season has the big team's line looked so good. Gordon Beck worked at left end and some at quarter back, while Howard alternated at the full back and left end positions. Max Towle played quarter some of the time but the coach felt that he was a little fresh to interject into a hard scrimmage, this being only the second time he was out. Coffee went at full back for a part of the game and showed up fiercely in spite of the fact that he is carrying a lame knee.

Captain Purdy was troubled with a slightly injured knee and a severe cold on the lungs and did not risk himself in the fray. Israel the speedy second string back taking his place at right half back. Israel is rather light but is a hard linesmacher and is shifty in the open field. Purdy will not scrimmage again until the Washburn game Saturday.
