PALLADIAN HISTORY
In the fall term of 1871 the Palladian Society, which is the oldest in the University, was organized by a small number of male students, and, as some one has since related, commenced work with a lamp, two or three chairs, a president, and some other bric-a-brac. Having waded through many difficulties at first, they decided they required a motto to guide
—————————— | | —————————— | | Page Image
them. The following was chosen and has remained with us through all these years, "Forma Mentis Aeterna Est." In 1873, part of the members, owing to some misunderstanding, withdrew and formed the Adelphian Society. But with the grit which has characterized the Palladian Society throughtout its thirty years of glorious life, it found that by admitting ladies within its bounds it might become a pride to the institution, which it has ever striven to be. In 1880 the present hall was fitted up, and here we will take a leap in this brief history to a sketch of the last four years.
The Palladians have followed the lines laid out by the founders of the society during this time, with a degree of success which has been a cause for much self-congratulation to its members. Our activity has been many sided. We have finally laid the old well-worn carpet away to rest, but its many memories still remain. And in its place we have put another, which we have consecrated by all the various rites which go to make the hall a place always to be remembered by Palladians. We also have reconstructed our stage so that it is possible, with electric footlights and sidelights, to present the most varied programs. New paper and frescoes now conceal the marks of other years, and new curtains have replaced the old over the doors and windows, while a cosy window-seat adds its attraction to our already conscious welcome. We may now claim, without fear of contradiction, to have the most cheery and homelike place of retreat on the campus. We have also in our literary work endeavoured to keep up the high standard which our predecessors left us. This we, as of old, consider our important work. Our programs have been varied. The usual ones are of solid worth and interest. The individual productions have shown very gratifying preparation on the part of the participants. The special programs have always been a surprise, and suggest an ingenuity of plan and detail that shows the result of the training we receive here. Our oratorical
—————————— | | —————————— | | Page Image
contests have changes their name to the "Skiles and Williams Contests," but the excellency of the olden-time is still preserved.
While we hold our literary work our highest and most important aim, yet we have also found that the social side of our society is equally beneficial. This opportunity of meeting and learning to know one another we now hold to be no small part of the benefits we receive. We realize the binding force of these friendship ties even while yet in school, as year by year some of our fellow Palladians leave us. So we gladly lay aside the trying grind of school life, allow laughter and good cheer to reign. At Thanksgiving time, and on the occasions of other feeds and surprises, the old "Pall rag" still graces the floor. The picnics and parties all come as a glad relief to us, furnishing the healthful recreation in the midst of our work.
PALLADIAN BOYS' DEBATING CLUB.
The Palladian Boys' Debating Club was organized during the winter of 1895. E. F. Piper, G. E. Kindler, Pierson brothers, J. S. Smoyer, J. R. Burleigh, W. J. Hunting, R. S. Hunt, and Turner and Hansen of football fame were among its charter members.
By 1897 it had sixty members and since then its membership has steadily increased.
It was during the year 1897 that the celebrated mock national convention occurred in the university. The Palladian Club attended as a unit and was able to elect its president, G. E. Kindler, as chairman of the convention. In the discussions which took place the P.B.D.C. demonstrated that those who are destined to lead and control are not those who shout the loudest, but those who have a clear conception of the rules governing parliamentary bodies, and those who art self-possessed, clear, logical thinkers, and today it is an acknowledged fact that it does provide
—————————— | | —————————— | | Page Image
the best parliamentary training of any club in the institution.
G. E. Kindler, one of its ablest orators, won first place in the finals for the intercollegiate debates over the ablest debaters which the U. of N. had produced.
The fact that Nebraska has for several years had one or more women on the interstate debates has caused the P.B.D.C. to recognize their claim for admittance into the debating clubs, and to-day several women are now enrolled among its members.
The following officers now watch over the destinies of the club: E. C. Finlay, president; Hollister, vice-president, H. C. Crouch, secretary and treasurer; Doubt, sergeant-at-arms.
The club meets every Saturday evening and invites all to attend.

The object of the Palladian Year Book is to serve as a catalogue of information for Palladians, Palladian Alumni, and all University students in general who may wish to inform themselves concerning the society and its work. This object will be best attained if all former and present Palladians will take pains to send the Corresponding Secretary the names of any persons who may wish a copy of this book. They should also keep the society informed of changes in their address. We invite correspondence and promise to give it prompt attention.
