The Comenius Club
Upon the suggestion of Professor B. Shimek of the Iowa University, twelve Czech (Bohemian) students of the University of Nebraska, met in November, 1903 to discuss the advisability of forming an organization, in which an opportunity might be given to study the history, language and literature of Bohemia. The need of such a study was long felt by the Czech students since their knowledge regarding the Bohemian country was very limited. The idea consequently, met with unanimous approval and resulted in effecting a literary society know as the “Comenius Club.”
In order that the pursuit of this study might be made more systematic and successful the club has presented a petition to the Board of Regents asking for the introduction of Czech instruction into the University curriculum as one of the regular courses in the modern languages. The granting of this request would be welcomed, no doubt, not only by the Czech students, but also by the students of other nationalities who wish to make a study of the Slavonic languages. For this purpose, the Czech is especially suitable as a type of these languages because of its high development and the wealth of its literature.
The work of the club, however, is not confined to the University alone. Since its organization through the efforts of the members, similar societies have been founded in six Czech settlements within the state. Others are soon to follow. Among the students of other states, clubs were organized this year at Ames College, Iowa University, and the University of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Chicago, Michigan and other universities and colleges are expected to form like clubs in the near future.
Since the year of 1903, the number of the Czech students at the University, and also the membership of the club, has increased three hundred per cent. At the present time the club has nearly fifty members and it is quite certain that this number will reach sixty the coming fall.

The Komensky Club was organized November, 1903, by a number of Czech (Bohemian) students attending the University of Nebraska. The purpose of the club was to become better acquainted with the language and literature of Bohemia and to interest other Bohemians over the state in the pursuit of University study. Very appropriately the name of Bohemia’s famous educator, John Amos Komensky (Comenius) was chosen to designate the association.
At its meetings held semi-monthly, the club enjoys literary and musical programs. During the season of 1910-1911, a number of profitable gatherings have been held at some of which well-known lecturers and musicians have appeared. At two of the meetings the ten Bohemian members of the State Legislature were guests of honor. The club united its appreciation of the distinctions which have come this year to certain members; notably Thomas Konop, a charter member, who was elected to the national United States Congress from Wisconsin: Otto Kotouc, another charter member, who is doing loyal service to his state in Nebraska’s legislature: Sylvester V. Shonka, unanimously elected captain of Nebraska’s football team; Joseph T. Votava, member of debating team winning from Wisconsin, elected without a dissenting vote to be Ivy Day orator.
Page 2
The club has taken an active interest in University affairs in general and has contributed its share to all undertakings making for a greater University.
In the summer of 1910 the club was represented by a delegation at the special services held in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, at the unveiling of the beautiful memorial to Prof. Jeffery D. Hrbek, the first instructor in Bohemian at the University of Nebraska. The club’s representatives also took an active and prominent part in the convention of the associated Komensky Clubs held in Iowa City, Iowa, in June. Two important executive offices are held by members of the local club. The Komensky Magazine, the first and only Bohemian publication issued from Lincoln, is devoted to the cause of education among the young people of Bohemian parentage in the United States.

‘Nebraskans Looked Like Carnival Hoodlums,’ Says New York Writer
The New York News, printed in “lil old New Yolk,” had several comments to make after the Army-Nebraska clash at the Michie stadium at West Point last Saturday.
The New York writers seemed to take huge delight in commenting on the appearance of the Nebraskans while on the Cornhusker Special bound for the game and when the Nebraska team was on the field against the Cadets. Paul Gallico was the gentleman who pushed the typewriter keys on this article and below are a few on the comments:
“One of the Munn boys went in to play for Nebraska and it looked like the Singer building coming to life. It took the boy three seconds in the huddle to come down to sea level where he could hear the play called.
Band Is Not Unusual
“The Nebraska band played spiritedly, marched raggedly and were dressed like Western Union messengers.”
In Callico’s comment on the R. O. T. C. band from Nebraska, he probably meant that the boys looked quite dashing for the messenger boys are quite a dashing lot. At any rate if there was supposed to be irony in the comment on the band boys, we fail to see how it was brought about for the university

Physical Education
In the days of old, when a child was cross and irritable, our forefathers thought it the machination of a devil - some think so still - but doctors now diagnose the cause to be a bad stomach or liver...
In fact we are learning that not only bodily health, but mental power, moral character, and even spiritual life are affected by physical vigor.
Life Lessons From the Stadium
Hard Work- The strenuous drilling and practice required to win the victory here, is a reminder that, in the game of live, hard work, self-denial, and tenacity of purpose are absolutely necessary.
Master- Our boys here all realize that every member of the Team must be subject to the Captain. He eats, sleeps, works and fights under his Captain's control. You know that's the only way to make a winning team.
Memorial
This is the cui bono. This is why we are gathered here today. Is it not worth while? But there is something better and greater. We are breaking ground for a MEMORIAL STADIUM...Recall how our boys "Went over the top" in France, and here and now let every one of you resolve that in the great world of struggles and contests to come you will equal their achievements.

THE SCHILLER FESTIVAL.
Great Poet’s Hundredth Anniversary Will Be Celebrated May 9.
Next Tuesday, May 9th, the University and particularly the German department will celebrate the one-hundredth anniversary of the great German poet’s death. Preparations have been going on for considerable time to worthily share i the homage that is given him at home and abroad, wherever man is civilized are making laudable efforts to fitly express the reverence and admiration Americans feel for the great German gymnasiat knows some of Schiller’s plays and poems much better than do American college students. Who hasn’t read Tell, or Wallenstein or Maria Stuart or Das Lied Von Der Glocke? How much pure delight is ours when reading the beautiful lines of Schiller’s German. The reader forgets all about the declensions and prepositions and other grammatical apparatus, and simply follows him in his ideal flight to escape the commonplace.
The University should greatly appreciate the fact that the German department has gone to so much trouble to give the whole university community a Schiller-Abend. As the program shows, some of the finest musicians in the city will lend their aid to make the occasion a memorable one. Parts of some German plays will given in the orginal. Suitable costumes have benn sent for. The committee which has the matter in charge are planning appropriate stage settings and other decorations. The plain moral of all this is: Keep your Tuesday evening free so that you can spend as hour or two with Schiller.
Johann Christoph Friedrich Schiller was born at Marbach in Wurtenberg, Nov. 10, 1759. His father was an army surgeon. At the age of fourteen he entered the military academy founded by the Duke of Wurtemberg. He first selected law, but afterward changed to medicine. At the age of twenty-one he graduated. Even before his graduation he wrote the revolutionary drama “Dri Rauber,†which reflected his feeling of rebellion against the petty tyranny of the school. He was so hemmed in by the Duke’s commands that he was forced to flee and became an exile from his country if he would remain true to his ideals. His life ever after was one long struggle,--his years of struggle with poverty, his attempt to develop a noble character, his sincere efforts to understand life, a struggle against sickness and disease. Yet he wrote lyrics, drama, philosophical treatises, which cannot be excelled. The last ten years of his life were spent in loving companionship with Goethe. He died May 9, 1805, at the age 45.
Carlyle says of him: “He was a high ministering servant at truth’s altar, and bore himself worthily in the office he held.â€

UN-L’s iron gates still standing after 90 years
1982 marks the 90th anniversary of the purchase of the old iron gates, university landmarks, that now stand at the entrances to the columns northeast of Memorial Stadium. Those gates were the only entrances to the original University of Nebraska--Lincoln campus in 1892.
The gates stood at the east entrance of University Hall, the only building on campus in 1892. They made complete an iron fence that surrounded the original campus bounded by 10th, 12th, R and T streets, covering 11 acres.
The purpose of the fence was to keep out wandering cows and late strolling students, according an article in the June 24 issue of the Daily Nebraskan.
The fence was removed in 1922 but the gates remained. The gates were used as bulletin boards for 20 years until they were moved in 1942.
New locations were chosen, one at the corner of 14th and R streets near the entrance to the student union building and the other at 12th and R streets, in front of Pharmacy Hall.
In 1942, as a result of much debate and an unofficial Daily Nebraskan poll which found 90 percent of the students polled in favor of saving the gates, the iron gates were saved. Rather than being donated to a university scrap iron drive, the iron gates were restored as monuments of the original campus.
Five years later, in 1947, the gates were moved again, this time being stored in the “archives†under the west stadium. The gates were later placed on the grounds of the Agricultural Campus.
In June of 1947, a group of UN-L alumni formed a committee to find a means of establishing a permanent memorial for the old gates.
The “Iron Gates Committeeâ€, as it was called, headed by Mrs. Fred Putney of Lincoln, found a permanent place for the gates.
A gift from Ralph Mueller of Cleveland, Ohio, a UN-L graduate of 1898, made possible the restoration of the weather-beaten gates.
The old iron gates were hung once again at the entrance to the columns near Memorial Stadium.
They were dedicated on June 11, 1955, as part of the annual university alumni roundup program. Each gate has a plaque on it with the appropriate wording for the memorials of the original university campus.
