Jame Canfield, Journal 1891-1894

James Canfield, chancellor of the University of Nebraska from 1891 to 1895, kept a journal for 4 years while he held this administrative position. In the journal he details his daily activities and the hours he spent in the office working with faculty, students, and others in support of the university.

In June 1894, an entry includes the following statement: "...closes my record of three years service- public service in Nebraska. There have been haps and mishaps, errors in judgment and temper, and all the short-comings that belong with all human undertakings. But there have been no more than these. The grand average certainly shows success- unlooked for and even unprecedented. I am not satisfied- except that I have never knowingly neglected an opportunity to forward the interest of the University, have not been idle, and have really and sincerely done my best."

Canfield left Nebraska in 1895 to become president at the Ohio State University. More about Canfield is found here: "Chancellors" and "University of Nebraska Chancellors."

Chancellor Samuel Avery, Speeches, 1914-1932

Found here are speeches and articles written by Samuel Avery during his service as Chancellor of the University of Nebraska. Some of the speeches were presented to the university community. Selected articles were published in local papers or publications such as The Nebraska Farmer.

Many sources state that Avery began as chancellor in 1908, while Board of Regent minutes state that he began as interim chancellor on January 1, 1909. In an article written for Nebraska Farmer in August 1915, Avery states the following: "It is perhaps not out of place to relate here some of the things that have been done in the university of Nebraska in the interests of agriculture since January 1, 1909, when I took up the work of my present position." His term as chancellor ended in 1927.

For more details on Avery see: "Samuel Avery: Nebraska's Patriot" and "University of Nebraska Chancellors."

In 1927, five years after the death of Frank L. Haller, letters he wrote to family during his travels were donated to the University Libraries. The letters recount Haller's trip to Europe in 1907, which started in May and ended in August. He traveled with friends Marion and Florie to France, Germany, Italy, and other locations. Haller noted that his letters would serve as a record of his adventures and this trip.
