Text

“To that composite American identity of the future, the Spanish and Mexican-American character will supply some of the most needed parts. No stock shows a grander historic retrospect-grander in religiousness and loyalty, or for patriotism, courage, decorum, gravity and honor.”

“As to the Spanish-speaking stock of our Southwest, it is certain to me that we do not begin to appreciate the splendor and sterling value of its element. Who knows but that element, like the course of some subterranean river, dipping invisible for a hundred or two hundred years, is now to emerge in broadest flow and permanent action?”

Walt Whitman

The Institute for Ethnic Studies in its conscientious desire to focus on the needs and goals of Chicanos and their communities has sponsored community services and educational and cultural programs. The minor in Chicano Studies is designed to support these efforts and to offer exposure to the past and present experiences of Chicanos in this society. These studies are designed to allow for an introduction to those factors and areas which bear on the lives and experiences of Chicanos and to serve as a vehicle of relevant and objective scholarship relating to their experiences. The minor in Chicano Studies seeks to increase the participation of Chicano studentsw with particular educational and academic interests as well as aid in the involvement of students in general and in particular those whose vocation (especially teaching) will bring them into contact with Chicanos.
