Faculty

The early faculty felt that all students should study Greek and especially Latin because those languages help students to learn and understand English grammar. Many professors were also of the mind that a classical education made for more well-rounded citizens. Learning about the civilizations that gave American government its inspiration made for more citizens who understood how their country was set up. As time went on, professors felt the strain from the push to incorporate vocational education into the University, and the professors changed their argument. A "Liberal Arts" education was the new system that Classics faculty fought for because it was the only way for their department to stay alive.
